An Irresistible Invitation to Let Loose

In early 1985, the funk/R&B group DeBarge released an infectious anthem that quickly became a dance floor sensation. Rhythm of the Night was an irresistible invitation to abandon one’s cares and immerse oneself in pulsating grooves and joyous revelry.

Crafted by the legendary songwriter Diane Warren and produced by Richard Perry, known for his work with icons like the Pointer Sisters and Carly Simon, the track was a departure from DeBarge’s ballad-heavy repertoire, offering a more upbeat, dance-oriented vibe.

The track’s upbeat melodies and singalong chorus radiated an infectious, feverish energy. But beneath the party-starting vibrance were deeper themes of escapism and mental respite. The song’s inception was a strategic move by Motown Records, aiming to replicate the success Lionel Richie found with danceable hits like All Night Long.

    The Cultural Phenomenon

Upon its release, Rhythm of the Night quickly ascended the charts, reaching the top three on the Billboard Hot 100 and securing the number one spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Its infectious beat and uplifting lyrics found a perfect visual counterpart in its music video, which received heavy rotation on MTV and BET, further solidifying DeBarge’s status as pop superstars.

The track’s inclusion in the soundtrack of the Motown film “The Last Dragon” provided an additional boost, linking the song with the movie’s success and embedding it in the cultural zeitgeist of the time. The song’s legacy extends beyond the 80s, featuring in modern films like “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” and even becoming a running gag in the twelfth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” highlighting its enduring appeal.

    The Lyrics’ Cathartic Core

The opening verse paints a relatable picture of feeling smothered by life’s pressures (“When it feels like the world is on your shoulders”). However, DeBarge’s silky vocals guide the listener to a liberating solution: “It’s time to get out, step out into the street/Where all of the action is right there at your feet.”

This enticing premise builds to the hook’s ecstatic mantra: “To the beat of the rhythm of the night/Dance until the morning light/Forget about the worries on your mind.” It’s a shameless invitation to lose oneself in physical movement and sonic rapture.

The lyrics contrast mundane malaise with vibrant scenes of pulsing street life, bright lights, and a night of transcendent possibilities. As the band harmonises, “Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known,” it’s as if they’re personally ushering you into a world of liberated bliss.

    An Enduring Musical Tonic

While quintessentially ’80s with its sleek production, bright synths, and El DeBarge’s soaring vocals, Rhythm of the Night has remained a potent pick-me-up over decades. Its core message of claiming moments of euphoric release has made it a multi-generational catharsis.

From danced-out club nights to weddings, bat mitzvahs to self-care dance parties, this track’s ability to inspire uninhibited joy has cemented it as one of pop’s most uplifting anthems. When those opening rhythms hit, you’re immediately transported to neon-lit revelry and the directive to “forget about the worries on your mind.”

In under four delirious minutes, DeBarge concocted a perfect tonic—a dose of funk, a pinch of pop, and an unabashed invitation to leave your baggage at the door. Over 35 years later, the rhythm still hasn’t lost its intoxicating, night-conquering powers.

    Verse 1: El DeBarge
When it feels like the world is on your shoulders
And all of the madness has got you going crazy
It’s time to get out, step out into the street
Where all of the action is right there at your feet

    Pre-Chorus: El DeBarge
Well, I know a place where we can dance the whole night away
    Underneath electric stars
Just come with me and we can shake your blues right away
You’ll be doing fine when the music starts, oh

    Chorus: DeBarge, El DeBarge
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind
(You can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
(Oh, the rhythm of the night, oh yeah)

    Verse 2: El DeBarge
Look out on the street now, the party’s just beginning
    The music’s playing, a celebration’s starting
Under the street lights the scene is being set
A night for romance, a night you won’t forget

    Pre-Chorus: El DeBarge
So, come join the fun, this ain’t no time to be staying home
Ooh, there’s too much going on
Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known
We’re gonna have a good time the whole night long, oh

    Chorus: DeBarge, El DeBarge
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind
(You can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
(Oh, the rhythm of the night, oh yeah)

    Pre-Chorus: El DeBarge
Come join the fun, this ain’t no time to be staying home
Ooh, there’s too much going on
Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known
We’re gonna have a good time the whole night long, oh

    Chorus: DeBarge, El DeBarge
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind
(You can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Oh baby, oh darlin’)
Forget about the worries on your mind (Oh)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Oh baby, ooh)
Forget about the worries on your mind (Ooh)
    [Outro: DeBarge, El DeBarge]
    La, la-la-la (La-la-la-la-la-la)
La, la, la, la, la, la (La-la-la-la-la-la-la, la, la-la-la)
    La, la-la-la (The music’s playing)
La, la, la (It’s a celebration), la, la, la
    (The music’s playing, everybody dance)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-whoa)
Forget about the worries on your mind
(‘Cause you can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind
You can leave them all behind
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
    (Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-whoa)
