    A Heartbreak Anthem

Chappell Roan has quickly established herself as one of pop’s most compelling storytellers with her vivid, cinematic songwriting.

The Missouri-born singer-songwriter’s 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, earned widespread critical acclaim, landing at #2 on The A.V. Club’s year-end list.

Now, she’s ushering in her highly anticipated “next chapter” with the searing new single Good Luck, Babe!

The Emotional Centrepiece of Her Next Era

Released on April 5th, 2024, as the lead single from an as-yet-untitled upcoming project, Good Luck, Babe! marks Roan’s first new music since her breakout debut last year.

The poignant track was written by Roan herself and produced by her frequent collaborator Dan Nigro, who also worked extensively on Olivia Rodrigo’s blockbuster SOUR.

Roan had been performing Good Luck, Babe! live on recent tours before its official release. But the studio version takes the emotional intensity to a new level with its soaring Kate Bush inspired vocals.

    A Tragic Relationship Examined

Lyrically, Good Luck, Babe! chronicles a secret relationship between Roan and another woman, doomed by one partner’s internalised homophobia and inability to embrace her queer identity due to societal pressures of compulsory heterosexuality.

The chorus sees Roan devastatingly plead with her lover: “You can kiss a hundred boys in bars / Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling / You can say it’s just the way you are / Make a new excuse, another stupid reason / Good luck, babe / You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling.”

As Chappell Roan explained, it explores “a common situationship within queer relationships—where someone is struggling with coming to terms with themselves.”

    Lyrical Deeper Dive

The opening verse sets the scene vividly: “It’s fine, it’s cool / You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth / And guess I’m the fool / With her arms out like an angel through the car sunroof.”

Despite her lover’s denial of their bond, Roan sees through it, portraying her vulnerability yet resolute perspective.

The pre-chorus doubles down on this narrative:

“I don’t wanna call it off / But you don’t wanna call it love / You only wanna be the one that I call baby.”

Roan longs for her partner to fully commit emotionally, while the other party remains emotionally unavailable.

Then, the devastating bridge offers a glimpse into the future if her partner remains in denial of her true self:

“When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night / With your head in your hands, you’re nothing more than his wife / And when you think about me, all of those years ago / You’re standing face to face with ‘I told you so’.“

An Organic Progression of Roan’s Storytelling

The raw, emotional substance of Good Luck, Babe! is consistent with the narrative throughline Roan has carefully crafted across her existing discography, exploring queer identity and sexuality.

It’s a successor to “Casual” from The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which also chronicled the complexities of unrequited queer desire and love.

The bridge echoes the album opener “Femininomenon,” which imagined a woman trapped in an unfulfilling suburban heterosexual relationship.

Roan has cited iconic songwriters like Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell as major influences on her cinematic, storytelling-driven approach.

With Good Luck, Babe! she continues cementing her own legacy as a vital new voice, giving an honest, nuanced perspective to the queer experience often overlooked in mainstream music.

The Continued Rise of a Theatrical Pop Auteur

Since her debut, Roan’s stardom has rapidly escalated. She earned acclaim opening for Olivia Rodrigo on tour in 2023 and made her TV debut on Colbert earlier this year.

With her knack for rich, detailed storytelling and powerful vocal presence, Roan is establishing herself as a true artistic auteur in the lineage of ambitious pop singer-songwriters like Lana Del Rey and Lorde.

Good Luck, Babe! showcases her for the evocative, bold creative voice she’s rapidly become.

As Roan said in an interview, her aim with the song was simple but impactful:

“I needed to write a song about a common situationship within queer relationships—where someone is struggling with coming to terms with themselves. It’s a song about wishing well to someone who is avoidant of their true feelings.“

If Good Luck, Babe! is just the opening salvo of Roan’s “next chapter,” then fans have even more poignant, theatrical pop excellence to look forward to very soon.

With its potent emotional resonance and nuanced exploration of complex themes, the single cements Chappell Roan as an important new voice, giving mainstream exposure to long-overlooked experiences and perspectives.

Chappell Roan Good Luck, Babe! Lyrics

    Verse 1
    It’s fine, it’s cool
You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth
    And guess I’m the fool
With her arms out like an angel through the car sunroof

    Pre-Chorus
I don’t wanna call it off
But you don’t wanna call it love
You only wanna be the one that I call baby

    Chorus
You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling
You can say it’s just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

    Verse 2
    I’m cliché, who cares?
It’s a sexually explicit kind of love affair
And I cry, it’s not fair
I just need a little lovin’, I just need a little air

    Pre-Chorus
Think I’m gonna call it off
Even if you call it love
I just wanna love someone who calls me baby

    Chorus
You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling
You can say it’s just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

    Bridge
When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night
With your head in your hands, you’re nothing more than his wife
And when you think about me, all of those years ago
You’re standing face to face with “I told you so”
You know I hate to say it, I told you so
You know I hate to say, but I told you so

    Chorus
You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling (Well, I told you so)
You can say it’s just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

    Outro
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
