Dutch-born, Nashville-based artist Judy Blank drops her latest single Dinosaurs through Rounder Records.
It’s a deceptively buoyant take on environmental dread that somehow makes the apocalypse sound surprisingly groovy.
Swirling with the warmth of vintage AM radio and sharp indie sensibilities, Dinosaurs feels like a friendly ghost story about our warming world.
Blank’s voice dances between sweetness and warning, creating an atmosphere that’s both nostalgic and unnervingly current.
“I was obsessed with disaster movies as a kid,” says Blank. “Now I sometimes feel like I’m living in one. When I wrote this song, I thought of it as a postcard from the future. I hope it can be a low-key reminder that it’s time to change the ending.”
What stands out is how Blank weaves everyday anxieties with larger existential threats.
The opening lines “Hello, I’m breathing hot air alone in my room” immediately place us in that familiar space of personal isolation, before expanding outward to global concerns.
She name-drops Paul McCartney and pizza parties in the same breath as environmental collapse, making the apocalypse feel oddly intimate.
After winning the 2023 Gold Award in the Netherlands with her debut Morning Sun, Blank made the leap to Nashville in early 2024.
Her signing to Rounder Records marks an exciting new chapter, with Dinosaurs serving as the lead single from her upcoming three-track release Lil’ Mood.
The production creates a dreamy, almost suspended-in-time quality – fitting for a song about waiting for the world to end.
Each instrumental element feels intentionally placed to create contrast between the song’s weighty message and its light musical touch.
It’s this tension that gives Dinosaurs its unique emotional resonance.
