AJ Tracey and Jorja Smith have linked up for Crush, released February 12, 2025, a nostalgic love letter that samples Brandy’s Love Wouldn’t Count Me Out.

The track captures those teenage butterflies. You know, back when MSN Messenger was your lifeline to your crush and sharing MP3s felt like poetry.

Brandy’s silky smooth vocals from “Love Wouldn’t Count Me Out” set the foundation, while AJ and Jorja build their own story of modern romance.

The production, handled by Raheem Balogun, AJ Platinum and Nathaniel London, strikes that perfect balance between old school R&B warmth and contemporary British edge.

AJ opens with a charming confession: “Like my girls how I like my coffee, sweet / Or like my Hennessy, neat.”

It’s playful but sincere – classic AJ style.

Then there’s Jorja, who brings the emotional weight: “I don’t wanna cause any problems / You’re only tryna please yourself.”

The push-pull dynamic between them creates this beautifully messy portrait of young love.

Shot by LateMilk, the video feels like thumbing through a vintage photo album.

There’s AJ and Jorja meeting at a café, those intimate conversations that feel like they could last forever.

It’s simple but effective, letting their natural chemistry do the heavy lifting.

“When I’m with a love interest, I want it to be soft and passionate,” AJ explains, revealing a side we rarely see.

“I need a space in my life that’s warm.”

For Jorja, the track sparked memories of her early days: “Makes me think of getting on the bus to school, makes me think of summer in the 2000s.”

This track feels more like two artists who’ve known each other for years finally finding the perfect moment to create together.

Remember when AJ sampled Jorja’s Wandering Romance for Ladbroke Grove?

Now they’re properly in the studio together, and that history shows in every bar.

The video feels less like a polished production and more like catching up with old mates, which, in a way, is exactly what it is.

Between the café scenes and street shots, you get these glimpses of genuine connection that no amount of direction could fake.

For something so nostalgic, Crush feels remarkably fresh. Maybe it’s because they’re not trying to recreate the past but rather channel those familiar feelings into something new.

Like getting those old butterflies but being wise enough now to know what to do with them.

AJ Tracey Crush (feat. Jorja Smith) Lyrics

    Intro: Brandy
It used to be that you couldn’t live without me
But now you think you’re better without me
    So now it’s over
I guess it wasn’t true when you said, “I love you”
‘Cause love just wouldn’t count me out

    Verse 1: AJ Tracey
Like my girls how I like my coffee, sweet
Or like my Hennessy, neat (Facts)
I don’t wanna wear my heart on my top or sleeve
    Unless it’s the CDG
    Like, baby girl, be easy
I’ll hold your hand, but still be greazy (Yo)
    2K23 LON Weezy
Fuck FaceTime, come see me in 3D
Mi-might get your ex link popped, I don’t play fair
Let’s hold hands on the block ’cause it’s safe there
We can smoke blunts in a Knightsbridge penthouse
Bet you thought I was gonna say Mayfair
I had draws in the Percil bag, now I’m tryna be your arm for a Virgil bag
I love your braids and the way that you style it too, but I bet you heard all that

    Verse 2: Jorja Smith
I don’t wanna cause any problems
    You’re only tryna please yourself
Know I got what you’re after
    But you want something else
You just wanna live with her
I don’t wanna take it all
Like I spent time tryna build
And you just wanna make me fall, what?
    I like that
When you say you’re gonna hold me down
    Fight back
If you don’t surf, I’ll drown
    You said it was over
You said it was inside out
Now you keep lookin’ over your shoulder
Bet you wish it was something now

    Chorus: Jorja Smith
I listened when you told me
I cannot be sorry, boy, I’ve tried
I wish you’d just hold me
I have done this way too many times
Oh, you wanna stand with me now
Yeah, you want to ride when it all falls down
I wish you’d just hold me

    Verse 3: AJ Tracey
I see you in my future, you’re so groovy
    Let’s make a full-length movie
You’re set good like when you add oats to a smoothie
I wanna see your skin turn ruby
Put your hands on the glass in the condo
Breathe while I hit you with the three stroke combo
    It’s a big .44, not a snubnose, no safety
I wanna lips you in public, rate me
I’m tryna give your old ting a reason to hate me
You got an aura, I’m feelin’ it lately
And you’re a blessing that I love and appreciate greatly
Outside, you’re a angel and classy
Elegant, but I’m tryna turn that nasty
Give me a cuddle, recharge me
We can watch anime while I put a bite on your asscheek

    Chorus: Jorja Smith
I listened when you told me
I cannot be sorry, boy, l’ve tried
I wish you’d just hold me
I have done this way too many times
Oh, you wanna stand with me now
Yeah, you want to ride when it all falls down
I wish you’d just hold me (You’d just hold me)

    Outro: Jorja Smith & Brandy
    ‘Cause why
Why do we do this all the time?
Who even really knows why (Oh, why?)
    Why I like
You, you are the reason I don’t mind (I don’t mind)
You are the reason that I’m blind
But you love me so right

It used to be that you couldn’t live without me
But now you think you’re better without me
    So now it’s over
I guess it wasn’t true when you said “I love you”
‘Cause love just wouldn’t count me out
