It’s hard to believe it’s already been 15 years since Lady Gaga and Beyonce formed one of the most iconic alliances of our time.

There’s no doubt that ‘Telephone’ was one of the biggest musical events of the modern era, bringing two of the greats together for a track that still resonates with fans today.

It felt, in many ways, like a unique obscurity. It’s not often that two superstars from such different musical backgrounds come together in such a seamless way, and perhaps that’s why ‘Telephone’ was such a hit.

It was a once in a generation thing, unlikely to ever be repeated. Except, it is about to be repeated…

Okay, we might be jumping to conclusions here, but Lady Gaga has certainly teased that herself and Beyonce are returning to the studio.

During an interview earlier in February, Gaga was asked if the music video would ‘ever be continued’, to which she replied ‘yes’.

There have also been a lot of ‘maybe’s and cheeky smiles to add to the mix, so it’s not outside of the question that the sequel to ‘Telephone’ is finally happening.

And we mention the word ‘sequel’, of course, because it wasn’t just the song that was a hit.

Who can forget the incredible ten minute music video, revolving around a thrilling narrative of espionage and high-fashion visuals, with Gaga and Beyonce in the middle taking the world by storm?

Fans want to see the continuation of this video just as much as they want to hear the music, and we think it’s about time their hunger was appeased.

How Much of a Hit Might the Sequel Be?

The only thing holding both Gaga and Beyonce back could only be uncertainty. At the time of ‘Telephone’s release, both artists were at the top of their game.

For Gaga, ‘Poker Face’ had been a mega hit that cemented her place in the music scene.

Culturally, it was a case of perfect timing. In 2009, the world was becoming steadily more digitalised, with the song being shared across a multitude of platforms.

Unsurprisingly, even online casinos got involved, capitalising on the song’s themes of risk and high stakes, to the point where the song essentially became adopted by the online gambling scene. But things have moved on.

No one is visiting LeoVegas UK because they listened to and liked ‘Poker Face’, and vice versa, online casinos have made it pretty big without having to tap into trending hits to engage new fans.

We wouldn’t go as far as saying that the song is dated, but it’s certainly had its time, and the same could be true of ‘Telephone’.

Just look at the music Beyonce is making now. In many ways, it couldn’t be further from the vibe and essence of her Gaga collab, and it’s important to note that her fanbase has changed too.

Her latest album, ‘Cowboy Carter’, has catapulted her into the country scene, and focuses more on guitar, hip-hop beats, and an infusion of country storytelling.

To suddenly revert back to the high-energy, synth-heavy pop sound of ‘Telephone’ might be a risk too far, and demonstrate that Beyonce is turning her back on her new musical direction, delving back into the past rather than running with the future.

    Will it Happen?

The online world and music industry has changed, and both Lady Gaga and Beyonce have changed with it.

There’s no guarantee a sequel to ‘Telephone’ will be as much of a hit as the first, but with all that being said, we still think it’s a risk worth taking.

No one will begrudge Gaga and Beyonce for taking a short trip down memory lane, and if it means we get to see two icons together for the second time, then that can only ever be a good thing!
