Bad Bunny doesn’t offer answers here. The song folds memory, disappointment, and unresolved feeling into something that doesn’t move in a straight line.
It opens on a river at six, a mention of photos taken and never shared, the kind of stillness that can mean safety or suffocation depending on who’s remembering.
The word “boquete” means pothole. Not poetic licence — just the local word for damage no one’s bothered to fix.
Benito doesn’t dress it up. “You’re like a pothole in Puerto Rico,” he says, “that’s why I avoid you.”
The line hits not because it’s dramatic, but because it isn’t. He’s not performing pain. He’s steering around it.
What sounds like a breakup song is also a portrait of a place. Puerto Rico lives inside the language, inside the refusal to translate.
The emotional mess is local. Not in theme — in texture. Bad Bunny has said before that people “miss a lot” in his music, but that doesn’t bother him. This isn’t meant to be decoded by everyone.
BOKeTE leans into an experimental indie pop sound, bending rhythm without losing clarity.
There’s a piano loop that paces itself carefully before giving way to subtle percussion rooted in Puerto Rican tradition.
The production doesn’t swell — it shifts. The song doesn’t lean on structure or crescendo. It allows the feeling to move however it wants.
The video, released April 25, doesn’t follow a story. It collects images: Benito making a call on a payphone that doesn’t ring, watching someone who might not be real, walking past himself without noticing.
He photographs someone who may have already left. In one moment, he walks alone on a beach.
In another, he sits across from an empty seat, pouring champagne and delivering the bridge with nothing theatrical in his tone.
He plays dominoes with no real urgency, carries silence like it’s part of the script. “Time to move on, let it go, and forget,” he says in Spanish. “And later on, if we need to fall in love again, we’ll fall in love.”
He says, near the end, “I’ve fallen in love 515 times… with you, it’s 516.” No grand reveal. Just a number dropped into the middle of the song like a receipt.
It’s the only moment that flirts with sentiment, and even then, he pulls away.
BOKeTE doesn’t resolve. There’s no rise, no redemption. The slang, the mood, the politics — they’re left intact. You can’t map it neatly.
But if you’ve ever had to drive around the same crack in the road over and over and pretend that’s normal, then the meaning finds you anyway.
