It’s hard to pin down Oxbow to a single genre, and that’s the way it should be. The band experiment, and the difference between their debut Fuckfest (1989) and their most recent, Thin Black Duke (2017), would leave most listeners thinking both albums were put out by two different bands. Fuckfest’s harsh raw sound is epitomised Frontman Eugene S. Robinson’s distinguishable high pitched whiney vocal approach, heard throughout the album opener ‘Curse’. Moon Hooch is a trio from New York, consisting of James Muschler (drums), Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen (both saxophone). The trio defines their music as ‘cave music’, a dance-orientated form of jazz which blends influences from EDM and jazz. The band started to make a name for themselves from busking in the New York subway. After building a fanbase from busking, they released their first album in 2013, and since have released two more albums, one live album and two EPs, one of which ‘Light it up’ has just been released earlier this year on Hornblow Recordings. During the heatwave that has hit the UK by storm, Love Supreme in plush, sunny Glynde, East Sussex turned into a hot supreme with incredible performances by the emerging jazz acts coming out of the UK, and also the weather, with some of the hottest temperatures of the year so far. Situated in Glynde Place, just outside of Lewes, the festival overlooks stunning scenery with trees and fields as far as the eye can see. This year’s event felt like it was taking place in a tropical climate rather than that of Sussex, with temperatures reaching 30c and little respite…
Kamasi Washington released his debut ‘The Epic’ in 2015 to widespread acclaim. After working with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Kamasi earned an even bigger name for himself after the release of The Epic, a triple album spanning 170 minutes. The album set the bar for modern jazz and has pushed the genre’s boundaries with its dominantly thick texture and ambitious solos while avoiding cliches mainstream jazz had previously felt. With releases since, an EP last year and a full album scheduled for summer this year, he is retaining his prolific status and his performance…
