Streaming services like Netflix and social media have changed how we consume movies and television and how we interact with others when consuming this entertainment. Before these innovations, you may have interacted with your family in the room with you or with strangers as you exited the movie theatre. However, the proximity of this communication was small. Now, you can share your thoughts, and someone halfway across the world can engage with you. For these reasons, we see many movies and shows going viral; this has already been the case with three shows in 2024.

    The Traitors

Despite the first episode airing on BBC One in 2022, The Traitors saw a resurgence in popularity this year. The Traitors is a reality show that places 22 strangers in a Scottish castle, where they face different obstacles and challenges. The show blends adventure with a murder mystery theme and incentivizes players with a prize of up to £120,000. Even though this is a BBC One show, many other countries have seen the hype around The Traitors on apps like Twitter and TikTok. Fortunately, these individuals can watch the show with ExpressVPN for the UK to access content from other countries, including movies and television shows like The Traitors.

    One Day

Released on February 8th, 2024, One Day has captivated hearts worldwide. Another British television series, One Day, is available on Netflix in other countries, including Canada. The show follows the story of Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley, two students who met on the last day of college in Edinburgh and then engaged in a 20+ year-long friendship full of love and heartbreak. The show is based on David Nicholls’s 2009 novel of the same name, with a GoodReads rating of 3.82.

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Available on the Disney+ platform, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a fantasy television novel that first aired toward the end of 2023 but has recently become a viral sensation on TikTok, bringing in a broad audience demographic. The show stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, whom Zeus accuses of stealing his thunderbolt. The show was filmed in Vancouver, Canada, and has been praised for its world-building and staying faithful to the book’s material.

The fact that there are already shows going viral on various streaming platforms in 2024 is a positive testament to the quality of content we’ll see this year. In fact, one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year will be the third season of HBO’s The Bear. While there was once a time when Netflix dominated the streaming market, platforms like BBC One, HBO, and Disney+ are stepping up to the plate and creating shows that are viral sensations. In turn, this has increased the number of subscriptions people purchase. Amazon Prime isn’t far behind, and overall, it’s a win-win situation for this sector and the economy. Consumers can entertain themselves in different ways, and the streaming market will be able to increase its revenue in the new year.
