“Breathing should be easy… should I be suffocating?” Anna Duboc’s voice barely breaks the silence on Suffocating, but that line lands like a weight.

Written just before the Palisades fire forced her from her hometown, Suffocating captures the eerie quiet of emotional erosion—how slowly love can tighten until it feels like something else entirely.

Duboc co-wrote and co-produced the track with Matias Mora (known for his work with Chappell Roan and Gracie Abrams), and you can feel that influence in the detail-heavy production.

The track begins with soft piano chords, her vocal tone almost whispering, like she’s trying not to wake someone sleeping.

But as the emotion thickens, so does the arrangement—layered textures, ghostly harmonies, and flickers of percussion echo the tension in lines like “they’re not really for me but it’s fine / ’cause he paid for mine.”

There’s a bittersweet clarity by the final chorus, when she confesses, “I don’t want you to let go / but I’m losing control.”

On Suffocating the pressure builds quietly—and that’s what makes it so unnerving.

    Anna Duboc Suffocating Lyrics

We were out shopping for pants
you didn’t like the ones i used to dance in
you said they’re too baggy they need to be classy
so we found the perfect pants that you liked
and you paid for them i thought how sweet
    he’s paying for me
they’re not really for me but it’s fine
    cuz he paid for mine
    isn’t that sweet
    isn’t that everything

Will you take me as i am
    or fix me up again
i just want you to be content

    Kiss me
kiss me till i can’t breathe
    breathing should be easy
    should i be suffocating
some days it’s like i’m in a chokehold
hold me never let me go
    am i losing control

Tripping over my words as we’re slow dancing
i don’t want to say the wrong thing at the wrong time
praying to jesus that i keep the peace
    so i’ll just keep quiet

Will you take me as i am
    or fix me up again
my worth doesn’t depend on you

    Kiss me
kiss me till i can’t breathe
    breathing should be easy
    should i be suffocating
some days it’s like i’m in a chokehold
hold me never let me go
    am i losing control

Is this how it should be
why have i let you change me
    i didn’t need changing
you turned my summers to falls
    falling for it all
when you say you love me

This isn’t how it should be
    just kiss me
    you’re not letting me breathe
    breathing should be easy
    i shouldn’t be suffocating
i know you have me in a chokehold
i don’t want you to let go
    but i’m losing control
    (Kiss me, kiss me, oh)
