Fresh off winning the Grammy for Best Rap Album with Alligator Bites Never Heal—making her only the third Black woman to earn this honour after Cardi B and Lauryn Hill—26-year-old Doechii finally released the full version of Anxiety on March 5, 2025, via Top Dawg Entertainment/Capitol Records, fulfilling years of fan anticipation.

Originally a hidden gem on YouTube from her 2019 Coven Music sessions, Anxiety openly explores the torment of anxiety, crafting a sonic panic attack that quietly but persistently chips away at listeners, mirroring the very nature of the condition.

Built around a sample of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know, the track opens with a melodic, emotive chorus before transitioning into her signature rapid-fire flow in the verses.

“Anxiety, keep on tryin’ me, I feel it quietly, tryna silence me (yeah)/ My anxiety, can’t shake it off of me/ Somebody’s watching me, and my anxiety,” she croons.

The paradoxical lyric captures anxiety’s covert operation, quietly sabotaging confidence while amplifying internal noise.

It’s visceral yet relatable, painting anxiety as an invisible antagonist.

What Does Doechii’s “Anxiety” Really Mean?

Beyond personal angst, Doechii takes a broader swipe at systemic stressors, hinting at societal pressures and political paranoia.

Lines referencing “Florida” and “new world order” paranoia suggest anxiety isn’t only personal—it’s cultural and societal.

References to running from “blue” and “rojo” lights cleverly hint at deeper societal critiques, such as systemic racism and police brutality, layering her personal struggles with broader anxieties that resonate with listeners.

Anxiety’s Lyrical Playfulness and Deeper Meanings

Doechii’s verses cleverly bounce between emotional vulnerability and sharp wit.

The lyric “Solo, no mojo, I bounce back, no pogo/ Unhappy, no homo/ New brands, no logos/ Money on my juggla, natural hustler/ Think I need a smuggler up in Russia,” flips effortlessly between bravado and vulnerability.

Her playful use of language masks deeper insecurities, creating layers that listeners can unpack repeatedly.

The track expertly plays with pace, too—initially slow, almost languid, before spiralling into rapid, anxiety-inducing bursts.

This mirrors the unpredictable swings of anxiety itself, capturing how quickly calm can descend into chaos.

Fan Demand Leads to Official Release

Doechii initially shared Anxiety as part of her “Coven Music” YouTube series, where it quickly built a passionate following.

The track gained additional traction when Sleepy Hallow sampled it in his 2023 track of the same name, intensifying fan demands for Doechii’s full solo version.

After years of persistent requests, she obliged, re-recording her vocals for a polished yet emotionally raw version that stays true to the charm of the original.

Doechii teased the track’s release on TikTok, cleverly pairing serious lyrics with a humorous homage to the iconic dance scene between Will Smith and Ashley Banks from “Fresh Prince.”

The clip became an overnight sensation, accumulating over 80,000 TikTok mentions within 24 hours.

By the end of the weekend, mentions had skyrocketed to 650,000.

Upon the song’s official release, the original Coven Music video jumped from 200,000 to an astonishing 3,000,000 views, proving how effectively Doechii’s genuine connection with fans can turn authentic emotion into viral gold.

Doechii: Turning Personal Struggle into Musical Strength

The Tampa native’s transparency and willingness to confront anxiety publicly set Anxiety apart.

Rather than glossing over mental health with clichés or trite optimism, she leans into its complexity, embracing imperfections and contradictions.

This reflects the same authenticity she showed in her Grammy acceptance speech, where she stated:

“I know that there is some Black girl out there… and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are and I am a testimony.”

Her creativity radiates throughout this track, not only in its innovative sonic texture but also in the intricate layers of meaning she brings to such a complex subject.

Doechii balances raw emotion with artistic precision, crafting a piece that resonates on multiple levels—sonically, lyrically, and thematically.

Anxiety is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and all major streaming platforms.

    Refrain
    Anxiety
    Keep on tryin’ me

You could be my butler, shine my cutla’
Shout out to Oyenda, that’s the guzzler
Okay, next thing, my life is a wet dream
I call it a sex scene, the back is a nice tease
I tried to escape, my life is a X-rate
I’m sorry, a sex tape, you only get one take

    Interlude
    Quiet on the set, please
    Rolling anxiety
    In three, two, one

    Refrain
    Anxiety
    Keep on tryin’ me

Anxiety, anxiet—, oh, I feel anxiet—
My anxiety, anxiet—, oh, I feel it tryin’ (It’s my anxiety, can’t let it conquer me)
Keep it tryin’, keep it tryin’, oh, I feel the silence (It’s my anxiety, gotta shake it off of me)
Keep it quiet, keep it quiet, oh, somebody’s watchin’ me (It’s my anxiety, can’t let it caution me)
Anxiety, anxiet—, oh, I feel anxiety (It’s my anxiety, gotta keep it off of me)
Anxiety, anxiet—, oh, I feel it tryin’

Anxiety, anxiet—, oh, I feel anxiety

    Verse 2
    Court order from Florid-er
What’s in that clear blue water?
    No limits, no borders
What’s in that new world order?

    Negro run from popo (Popo)
That blue light and that rojo (Rojo)

My anxiety, it’s my anxiety, can’t shake it off of me (It’s my anxiety)
It’s my anxiety, gotta keep it off of me (Can’t shake it off of me)
It’s my anxiety, can’t shake it off of me (Oh, somebody’s watchin’ me)
It’s my anxiety, gotta keep it off of me

    Outro
Can’t shake it off of me, shake, shake it off of me
It’s my anxiety, gotta keep it off of me
Can’t shake it off of me, shake, shake it off of me
