Australian electropop duo Empire of the Sun has once again captivated listeners with their latest single, Cherry Blossom.

Released on June 21, 2024, this enchanting track serves as a preview of their highly anticipated album, “Ask That God,” set to drop on July 26th.

The song, co-written by Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore alongside GRANT (SWE), Fat Max Gsus, Vincent Pontare, and Salem Al Fakir, showcases the duo’s signature blend of ethereal melodies and introspective lyrics.

A New Chapter in Empire of the Sun’s Sonic Evolution

Cherry Blossom marks a significant milestone for Empire of the Sun, being their first major release since 2016’s “Two Vines.”

The track, produced by the band themselves in collaboration with Vargas & Lagola and Fat Max Gsus, exemplifies the group’s continued artistic growth and exploration of new sonic territories.

Luke Steele, one half of the duo, shared insights into the song’s meaning:

“This song is about seeing the majesty and beauty that lies before our very eyes. Making sure you don’t lose what is precious by taking it for granted. It’s essentially a love song: ‘our souls are sewing our fortune.’ Love is a traveller; it has no expiry date; it moves through the expanse of time, to far-off places, through far-off times.”

Nick Littlemore added his perspective, stating, “It’s about a feeling of newness and new life, and new opportunity to bring goodness. If we change ourselves rather than changing the world, then we do change the world.”

Delving into the “Cherry Blossom” Lyrics

The lyrics of Cherry Blossom paint a vivid picture of love, interconnectedness, and the ephemeral nature of life.

    Verse 1:
    “Cherry blossom, mountain top, snow
Where you venture, I will follow”

These opening lines immediately set the scene, evoking images of natural beauty and devotion.

The cherry blossom, a symbol of transience and renewal, is juxtaposed with the permanence of mountains and the purity of snow.

    “We reach out to everyone
    Everything and everywhere
All at once, all the time”

Here, the lyrics suggest a sense of unity and interconnectedness, reaching beyond individual experience to embrace a broader, more holistic view of existence.

    Chorus:
“I’m not gonna lose your love tonight
Don’t wanna waste what’s hard to find
    I love bein’ beside you
Our souls are sowin’ our fortune”

The chorus emphasises the preciousness of love and the determination to cherish it.

The line “Our souls are sowin’ our fortune” beautifully encapsulates the idea that our actions and connections shape our destiny.

    Verse 2:
    “Heavy blushing, quantum bit flow
    Synesthesia into rainbows”

These lines blend scientific concepts with poetic imagery, creating a sense of wonder and interconnectedness between the physical and emotional realms.

    “It’s holy, a lovers love
    Everything, everywhere
All at once, all the time”

The repetition of “Everything, everywhere / All at once, all the time” reinforces the theme of universal connection, while elevating love to a sacred status.

The Musical Landscape of “Cherry Blossom”

Empire of the Sun’s Cherry Blossom envelops listeners in a lush electronic soundscape.

The track opens with delicate synth melodies that set a dreamy tone, gradually building layers of shimmering arpeggios, electronic beats, and strings.

This rich sonic tapestry creates an atmosphere of wonder and nostalgia.

Luke Steele’s vocals float effortlessly above the instrumentation, delivering the emotionally charged lyrics with a blend of gentleness and intensity.

His performance during the chorus is particularly noteworthy, as his voice soars, emphasising the themes of cherishing fleeting moments and embracing life’s impermanence.

The production incorporates subtle elements like chimes, bells, and distant guitars, adding depth and texture to the overall sound.

These details reward repeated listens, revealing new nuances with each play.

Empire of the Sun’s Artistic Vision

Cherry Blossom serves as a tantalising glimpse into Empire of the Sun’s upcoming album, “Ask That God.”

The duo has expressed excitement about sharing their latest work with fans, hinting at the ambitious scope of the project.

Nick Littlemore commented on the album’s creative process: “It has been a journey unlike any other that Empire of the Sun has undertaken. We always ‘go there’ when it comes to exploration of both the self and the outside world. This body of work represents the greatest shift in consciousness our world has ever seen and that’s reflected in the music.”

Luke Steele added, “Ask That God is an album we searched for and were thankfully blessed with. We are nothing more than conduits gathering experience and finding what is meant for the Empire to find.”

The Impact and Reception of “Cherry Blossom”

Since its release, Cherry Blossom has garnered praise from fans and critics alike.

The song’s intricate production, coupled with its thought-provoking lyrics, has resonated with listeners seeking both emotional depth and sonic innovation in their music.

Many have noted the earworm quality of the chorus, with its memorable melody likely to linger in listeners’ minds long after the song ends.

The “twinkling vibe” of the instrumental has also been highlighted as a standout feature, contributing to the track’s ethereal atmosphere.

Exploring Empire of the Sun’s Musical Legacy

To fully appreciate Cherry Blossom, it’s worth revisiting Empire of the Sun’s earlier works.

Fans of the duo’s signature sound will find familiar elements in this latest release while also discovering new dimensions to their music.

For those new to Empire of the Sun, Cherry Blossom serves as an excellent entry point to explore their discography.

The band’s unique blend of electronic textures, pop sensibilities, and introspective lyrics has consistently set them apart in the music landscape.
