On April 9, 2021, Doja Cat released the irresistible single Kiss Me More, featuring SZA, as the lead single from her acclaimed third studio album, Planet Her.

The disco-influenced pop/R&B track was written by Doja Cat, SZA, Yeti Beats, Rogét Chahayed, Tizhimself, Carter Lang, and Dr. Luke, with the chorus interpolating the iconic melody from Olivia Newton-John’s 1981 hit “Physical.”

In an interview with Zane Lowe, Doja Cat explained the song’s origins simply: “I wanted to make a song about kissing. I just thought it would be cute.”

    Lyrical Breakdown

Lush, pulsating synths reminiscent of the golden age of disco lay the foundation, while a distorted guitar riff adds a touch of contemporary edge.

The flirtatious lyrics find Doja and SZA trading verses filled with bold sexuality.

Doja opens by pleading, “Can you kiss me more?” over the glistening disco-pop beat.

Her laidback flow contrasts with SZA’s more passionate third verse as she brags, “Pussy like holy grail, you know that.”

The instantly memorable chorus blends their vocals seamlessly over the nostalgic “Physical” melody.

Lines like “Boy, you write your name; I can do the same” conjure breathless make-out imagery.

The song’s lyrical themes delve into the complexities of desire and intimacy, exploring a spectrum of emotions.

A Celebration of Female Desire and Agency: Redefining Romance

Doja Cat’s verses challenge the notion that intimacy solely equates to physical connection, advocating for a deeper emotional connection fueled by passionate kisses.

SZA’s verse adds a layer of complexity, showcasing the potential pitfalls of unhealthy relationships and the importance of setting boundaries.

The song’s overall message is one of empowerment. Doja Cat and SZA reclaim the narrative surrounding female desire, dismantling outdated tropes and stereotypes.

They portray women as the architects of their own romantic experiences, free to explore their desires without societal constraints.

    Colourful Music Video

The Kiss Me More music video is a surreal, visually dazzling affair directed by Warren Fu.

Shot against vivid pink skies, it follows an astronaut (actor Alex Landi) who crash-lands on the mythical “Planet Her,” ruled by Doja Cat and SZA.

The astronaut encounters larger-than-life versions of the two artists on islands, with Doja delivering a verse in an orange jumpsuit and SZA serenading from amidst cherry blossom trees in a floral two-piece.

After being lured through a lip-shaped portal, he awakes in bed with Doja and SZA for a psychedelic encounter.

In the final scenes, it’s revealed the two rulers have been playing a video game mirroring the astronaut’s journey, collecting the bodies of men who explore their planet.

This inverted power dynamic asserts female agency over sexuality.

Throughout, Doja and SZA ooze sensual confidence amidst the wildly creative sets, costumes, and CGI imagery. The dreamlike video is a unique depiction of lust and desire.

    Commercial Performance

Kiss Me More was an instant smash upon release, making a notable debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song’s infectious rhythm and catchy lyrics propelled it to peak at #5 on the chart.

Its popularity extended globally, topping the charts in New Zealand, Mexico, Malaysia, and Singapore and securing a spot within the top five in numerous other countries.

The song’s widespread appeal was further amplified by a viral makeup transformation video, which featured Kiss Me More as its soundtrack.

This contributed to the track’s historic achievement as the longest-running all-female top 10 hit in American chart history.

The song was nominated for three Grammys: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (which it won, marking the first Grammy for both Doja Cat and SZA).

As of July 2022, it has been certified 5x multi-platinum by the RIAA for tracked sales equivalent to 5 million units.

Its massive success was aided by a viral makeup transformation video soundtracked by the song.

Kiss Me More went on to become the longest-running all-female top 10 hit in Hot 100 history, spending an impressive 27 weeks in the top 10.

Doja Cat Kiss Me More featuring SZA Lyrics

    Verse 1: Doja Cat
We hug and, yes, we make love
And always just say goodnight (La-la-la-la-la-la)

    Chorus: Doja Cat
    Can you kiss me more?
We’re so young, boy, we ain’t got nothin’ to lose, oh-oh
    It’s just principle
Baby, hold me ’cause I like the way you groove, oh-oh

    Post-Chorus: Doja Cat
Boy, you write your name, I can do the same
Oh, I love the taste, la-la-la-la-la-la
All on my tongue, I want it (La-la-la-la-la-la)
Boy, you write your name, I can do the same
Oh, I love the taste, la-la-la-la-la-la
All on my tongue, I want it (La-la-la-la-la-la)

    Verse 2: Doja Cat
I, I feel like fuckin’ somethin’
But we could be corny, fuck it
Sugar, I ain’t no dummy, dummy

We could kiss and just cut the rubbish
Then I might bе onto somethin’
I ain’t givin’ you one in public

Somethin’ we just gotta get into
Sign first, middle, last on the wisdom tooth
Niggas wishin’ that the pussy was a kissin’ booth
Taste breakfast, lunch, and gin and juice

And when we French, refresh, give me two
When I bite that lip, come get me too
He want lipstick, lip gloss, hickeys too, huh

    Can you kiss me more?
We’re so young, boy, we ain’t got nothin’ to lose, oh-oh

Push the limit, no, you ain’t good enough
