I’m sure you don’t need us to remind you. Still, there are some seriously great R&B pros out there who have not only conquered the music scene but have also become influential mentors for aspiring musicians, especially drummers. One name that instantly comes to mind is Questlove, the drumming virtuoso behind The Roots.

Known for his musical abilities to blend genres seamlessly, drummers both old and new look to Questlove for advice on all things drums. Over the years, these veteran drummers in the music industry have been sharing their advice far and wide. Here’s some of the best advice from the pros in the industry:

    Never Stop Learning

The learning journey should never stop for any drummer whether you’re self-taught and trying to pick up the tools of the trade through imitation or YouTube guides, or formally educated.

Regardless of your preferences, it’s easier than ever before to seek out classes. For example, with Pirate Studios’ drum lesson initiative, you can try both physical (in-studio) or online drum classes, which allow you to work with experienced teachers who have decades of insights into the drumming industry. These 1-2-1 formats enable you to find your groove as a beginner or improve your technique as a more experienced learner.

Lessons are diverse and cater to your needs. From dexterity improvement to note reading and, of course, dedicated time to practising with somebody there to ensure you’re using the right technique.

    Explore Different R&B Drummers

When trying to find your groove, exploring different R&B drummers and critiquing their techniques is key. R&B is a complex genre filled with diverse styles and influences, and each drummer brings their unique flair to the table.

Bernard Purdie, or ‘Purdie Shuffle’ king, is known for his impeccable timing while Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters is known as the master of rhythm and groove with his funky beats. Whether you’re working on your timing or finding your groove in the drum world, there’s something to be learned from each R&B drum master that you may not have known you needed until you find out. All the best things in life come to us by mistake, so they say.

    Stay True To Yourself

Staying true to yourself on your drumming journey is like playing the beat of your own heart. It’s vital because it’s what makes you, YOU! You see, drumming isn’t just about hitting those skins; it’s about expressing your soul through music. When you stay true to yourself, you infuse your playing with authenticity and originality. And that’s what it takes to get your music really felt, heard, and understood.

Anderson .Paak, the undisputable king of funk, R&B, hip-hop, and soul, is the absolute master of creating sounds that are so uniquely his own. Paak himself admits that the key to being the most successful drummer and musician is to push your own boundaries and stay true to your core.

Upon the release of his album ‘Oxnard’, Paak admitted that Dr Dre didn’t see where he was going with the album. Paak eventually pushed Dre to come around, but if it wasn’t for Paak believing so profusely in himself and his craft, the iconic album that includes sweet musical singles such as ‘Tints’ would have never graced our ears.

Let Your Drumming Horizon be Vast and Diverse

In essence, being a good drummer is not just about technical prowess; it’s about embracing a lifelong journey of growth, self-expression, and musical exploration. Never cease to learn, stay true to your voice, and let the vibrant tapestry of diverse R&B drummers guide you on a rhythmic adventure that shapes you into an exceptional musician. So, drum on, and let the beats of your heart feel the beats of the world.
