The Ascent of a New Rap Queen

In the rapidly shifting landscape of hip-hop, few artists have ascended as meteorically as Ice Spice.

The 23-year-old Bronx native burst onto the scene in 2022 with viral hits like Munch (Feelin’ U) and “Bikini Bottom,” showcasing her distinctive flow and magnetic charisma.

But it was the release of Deli in July 2023 that truly cemented Ice Spice as rap’s newest superstar.

    An Irresistible Banger

Produced by RIOTUSA, Deli is an infectious hip-hop/Jersey club hybrid that instantly commands listeners to the dancefloor.

Over a bouncy, rhythmic beat, Ice Spice unleashes her confident bars and playful cadences that have become her trademark.

From the opening “Grrah” ad-libs to the catchy chorus, the track oozes an undeniable swagger and energy.

“She a baddie, she showin’ her pants; she shake it like jelly… Hundred bands in Chanely, but I’m still shakin’ ass in a deli,” she raps on the memorable hook.

    Lyrical Prowess and Persona

Lyrically, Deli showcases Ice Spice’s clever wordplay and evocative storytelling.

She embraces her rising star power with boastful lines like “I’m the shit, I’m that bitch, I’m Miss Poopie” while also flaunting her humble Bronx roots: “Baddest lil’ bitch from my block.”

But “Deli” is more than just braggadocio. The song’s vivid scenes of Ice Spice moving weight through the deli aisles—”Bussin’ that pack, goin’ straight to the moon”—reinforce her street-certified persona.

It’s a duality that has made her so magnetic to fans.

“If she bad, then I let her seduce me / I love white b*tches like shoutout to Lucy,” she raps with her trademark nonchalance on the second verse, blending raunchy boasts with casual cultural references.

    The “Deli” Experience

Of course, no Ice Spice release is complete without immersive visuals to match the audio.

The Deli music video transplants the Bronx spitter into a colourful corner store, surrounded by twerking dancers as she glides through the aisles. It’s a classic NYC rap scene brought thrillingly to life.

It’s a classic rap video, with dancing, posing with stacks of money, and, best of all, some documentary-ish footage of fans stunting for the cameras at the video shoot.

    Meteoric Rise and Impact

Released as the lead single for the deluxe edition of her debut EP Like..?., Deli would become Ice Spice’s first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 when it debuted at #41.

Months later, in February 2024, it was certified platinum by the RIAA.

But its true impact is bigger than just charts and certifications. Deli solidified Ice Spice as the most vital new voice in hip-hop, amplifying her meteoric rise over the past year and a-half.

She’s gone from landing dream collaborations with idols like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift to starring in high-profile ad campaigns to supporting Doja Cat on a massive tour.

With her animated delivery and endearing charisma, Ice Spice has crossover appeal extending far beyond the rap world.

And Deli is undoubtedly the song that turned the world’s eyes towards this dynamic new star.

More than just a hip-hop banger, it’s an ecstatic celebration of Ice Spice’s idiosyncratic artistry and utterly irresistible persona.
