ISLAND’s debut album, ‘Feels Like Air’, begins with their single, ‘Ride’. It’s a great introduction to the album, which likewise is as perfect an introduction as you can get to a band. Lead singer Rollo Doherty’s gravelly voice pierces the music so that you are forced to listen to the lyrics (“Tonight, I’m awake, I know/We’re calling out like we’re never alone“).
‘The Day I Die’ is another track which makes you sit up and take notice (“Straight to heaven, or hell/ I don’t mind“). The bridge is also very catchy (“You say I’m never gonna go that way..“). Unsurprisingly, this was another single taken from the album.A lot of the songs seem to be based on the idea of morality, for example, in ‘ Something Perfect’, the quartet explores themes of sinning and penance in their quest for “something perfect“.
The title track ‘Feels Like Air’ is delicate before the guitar kicks in and the gravelly vocals make a reappearance in this unique love song.
‘Feels Like Air’ is an album which knows its purpose. The band knows exactly the sound they want to get out there and they have nailed it. Every track, including the interlude, stands out on its own but they all blend so well together to make the album. It’s a well-crafted piece of work of which the band should be very proud of and listeners will no doubt love.
