The talented Nigerian artist released her highly anticipated single Miniskirt at the end of 2021 via Konvest Music. Fusing afrobeat, reggae, pop, dancehall and more, Raebel has coined her sound Raebellious that attributes to her risk-taking and invigorating musical style.
We caught up with Raebel to find out more.
How would you describe your sound to new listeners?
Raebellious!!! It’s a mix of pop and reggae. And it brings a different type of feeling to their hearts and ears once they listen to it
Tell us about your latest song Miniskirt?
Miniskirt is a song about accepting who you are and not allowing society to pick what you ought to be. It’s there to make you stand out and be who you are truly happy with. It’s not just about a skimpy skirt. It’s a symbol that means different things to different people.
Who or what is inspiring you at the moment?
God is inspiring not just me but my management as well. Success inspires me too cos I want to be successful.
Is there a particular message you would like to get across through your music?
The message my music would be passing across is self-belief; letting people know we all go through stuff and can be better versions of ourselves. I used to be the kid everyone called weird, odd. I was written off, and many thought I’d never amount to anything but my God is the Greatest.
Did the past year and COVID hinder or inspire your creative talent?
Actually, it inspired me and I found out I could be a voice for all. It gave me more purpose and clarity on what I want to achieve as an artist.
Is there anywhere in the world you would love to travel to and perform?
London at the O2 Arena, of course, it would be a dream come true.
The Afrobeats sound is growing in the UK. Which UK artists you are listening to?
I listen to a lot of UK artists like BackRoad Gee, Pa Salieu, NSG, Tion Wayne, Jacob Banks, Ms Banks, AJ Tracey, ArrDee and lots more.
What do you find are the biggest challenges of being in the music industry right now?
The industry is very competitive, you’ve got to be a thousand per cent every time. The demand is so high and the stakes are even higher. So every day is a challenge, a big challenge if you want to be at the top
What’s a typical day for Raebel?
A typical day for me involves writing music. I write a lot of songs then sing unreleased songs, drawing, talking to a few people, and strategizing and planning with my manager.
What are the three things you cannot live without and why?
I can’t live without my pods or a headset (because I write songs just by listening to a beat and I really need them to concentrate.)
And I might not survive without music.
I can’t live without a pen and a book in case my phone dies and I get inspired I ought to write something down or else it’s gone.
I can’t live without making progress it makes me go into a numb depressed state lol.
What do you have planned music-wise for 2022?
I have a lot that will be happening this year. The Raebellion has started; it’s the Raebellion Season?.
I just recently released the visuals for my new release Miniskirt. I’m working on an EP and Album simultaneously ?. So expect songs, possible collaborations and at least an EP
