As long-time listeners to Luna Keller’s music, we’ve come to expect something extraordinary with each release, and Lighter than Before doesn’t disappoint.

It’s like reuniting with an old friend who always has a new story to tell—familiar yet full of surprises.

Lighter than Before feels like a natural evolution of her signature style.

The delicate guitar work that first drew us to her music is still there.

The chorus is particularly effective, with its catchy melody, toe-tapping rhythm and uplifting message.

The song’s strength lies in its simplicity with the gentle guitar accompaniment providing the perfect backdrop for Keller’s emotive voice.

This stripped-back acoustic track showcases Keller’s vulnerable vocals, creating an intimate atmosphere that invites listeners to share in her positive transformation following depression.

Keller’s delivery is raw and authentic and there is a warmth to her tone that perfectly complements the song’s themes of renewal and self-discovery.

Lyrically, the track encapsulates the spirit of resilience and growth. Keller’s metaphors of flowers breaking through concrete and the warmth of a new sun resonate strongly, offering hope without downplaying the struggles that preceded this moment of clarity.

“We can only see the stars at night, and walking through our darkness can help us to see and appreciate our own light more. I don’t want to take away from how terrible it was to go through depression, definitely do not recommend that experience. But I did go through it and since I can’t change that I might as well try to get something positive out of it. The truth is that before things got bad I hadn’t really faced myself and accepted myself fully. The inner work I had to do to pull myself out of that whole has become the foundation to the much healthier and joyful relationship that I have with myself” – Luna Keller

As the ninth chapter in Keller’s concept album Ocean Inside of Me, her new single Lighter than Before serves as a pivotal moment in the larger narrative.

It provides a necessary contrast to the album’s darker themes, allowing listeners a moment of respite and celebration.

The production, while minimal, is thoughtfully crafted. The addition of a “he-ey” choir featuring Keller’s parents adds a touching personal element.

This detail, along with the folky vibe introduced by California based producer Dominic Romano, elevates the track from a simple acoustic number to a more fully realised piece.

Luna Keller has crafted a deeply personal yet relatable anthem for everyone, encouraging us to embrace our vulnerability, find strength in our shadows, and emerge lighter than before.

Luna Keller Lighter Than Before Lyrics

    Close my eyes
    Take it in
The sun feels warm on my skin
    Feel the air
    Hear it sing
What a beautiful day to begin

    I feel lighter than before
I feel lighter and I wanna know
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings

    Side by side
    As we talk
I stand on my own feet I walk
    Now I wear
    Joyfully
The colours that paint all of me

    I feel lighter than before
I feel lighter and I wanna know
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings

Cause today I saw a flower grow
    from concrete walls
I felt the warmth of a new sun
It’s been a while since I stood this tall

    I feel lighter than before
I feel lighter and I wanna know
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow brings
    What tomorrow bring
