Morgan Wallen’s “If You Were Mine” is a slow-burning country ballad released in 2025, exploring the emotional risk of desiring someone already spoken for.

As part of his album I’m the Problem, the track imagines the private ache of a love that never gets to exist.

Released on May 16, 2025, this Morgan Wallen new song 2025 debuted at #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #19 on the Hot Country Songs chart. It’s the kind of track that sparks quiet searches: the late-night kind, looking not just for the lyrics, but for the meaning hidden between them.

She’s not his. That’s the first truth. The second is that it doesn’t matter…not here, not in the song’s half-lit world where honesty and restraint don’t share a table.

If You Were Mine isn’t a confession. It’s a fantasy so carefully rehearsed, it almost feels real.

From the first line, he’s disarmed. “A neon moon, yeah, it’s gettin’ late…” The setting is cliché on purpose, a bar, a gaze held too long, but Wallen’s delivery makes it feel personal. He’s not chasing her; he’s imagining what it would feel like if she stayed.

The track simmers instead of builds. “I’d lay you down, and I’d take my time,” he sings, as if the scene is already happening somewhere just out of frame.

“Would you let me drown in your ocean eyes?” The line echoes Billie Eilish’s earlier hit, intentional or not, folding her lyric into something darker, heavier.

Throughout the chorus, Wallen leans into his signature blend of tension and tenderness.

“Ain’t a part of you my hands wouldn’t wanna find”

There’s no filter, no metaphor to hide behind. It’s one of the rawest moments on I’m the Problem, an album already defined by late-night honesty and self-interrogation.

The If You Were Mine lyrics sketch out a fantasy, but they don’t resolve it. That’s what makes them so effective.

Wallen knows she’s taken. He even acknowledges “that shit at home,” but the moral line isn’t the point, the want is.

And fans hear that loud and clear. One YouTube comment read: “It’s like he’s not even trying to win her over. He’s just telling her the truth, knowing it won’t change anything.”

Wallen, who has remained relatively quiet about the track’s backstory, described the album’s title as a reflection of personal reckoning: “I’ve been a problem… but I’m trying to figure out if I still want to be.”

In this track, the answer feels suspended. He might be learning. But he’s still imagining.

That blurred line is where If You Were Mine lives. It’s not rooted in action or closure. It drifts between want and hesitation, lit by neon and late-night timing. Like a glance you hold a second too long.

One Reddit thread called it the “dark cousin” to Sand in My Boots. Others likened it to Single Than She Was with less bravado and more ache.

There’s a reason fans aren’t blasting it on loop, it’s not built for that. It’s built for after midnight. For what you’d say if no one else was listening.

So where does this leave the story? Nowhere really. No declarations. No decisions. Just the space between two people pretending they don’t know how close they came.

But what if she looked back?

And what if he didn’t stop her?

If You Were Mine Lyrics By Morgan Wallen

    Verse 1
A neon moon, yeah, it’s gettin’ late
I look at you and I ain’t thinkin’ straight
Yeah, horse to the water, prolly shouldn’t drink
But the truth is, we both wanna taste
You ain’t gotta go and hide your phone
I know that you got that shit at home
But damn, if I ever got you alone, just so you know

    Chorus
I’d lay you down and I’d take my time
Would you let me drown in your ocean eyes?
Ain’t a part of you my hands wouldn’t wanna find
That’s what I’d do if you were mine

    Verse 2
We both feel it, damn right, I said it
I know that it’s wrong, but I don’t regret it
If you want it to happen, baby, I’m gon’ let it
‘Cause I swear in a second

    Chorus
I’d lay you down and I’d take my time
Would you let me drown in your ocean eyes?
Ain’t a part of you my hands wouldn’t wanna find
That’s what I’d do if you were mine

    Post-Chorus
    If you were mine
    Yeah, if you were mine
    In another life, another life
What would it be like if you were mine?

    Chorus
Yeah, I’d lay you down and I’d take my time
Would you let me drown in your ocean eyes?
Ain’t a part of you, my hands wouldn’t wanna find
Yeah, that’s what I’d do if you were mine

    Post-Chorus
    If you were mine
    Yeah, if you were mine
    If you were mine
    Yeah, if you were mine
