Peyton Shay’s Lonely Chapstick is a quirky alt-pop confection that turns lip balm addiction into a love story.

This track from her upcoming EP, “Daydream Police,” blends electronic beats with guitar riffs, creating a playful backdrop for Shay’s direct vocals.

The song’s metaphor is unexpectedly charming. Who knew chapstick could represent the fear of intimacy?

Lonely Chapstick lyrics explore the thrill of a secret relationship while grappling with the desire for independence.

It’s a relatable struggle wrapped in a catchy tune.

“Before we even finished writing “Lonely Chapstick,” shares Shay, “there was a running joke about the music video incorporating a giant chapstick attached to a leash. When it came time to film the video, that concept still stuck and we just went for it. Although it looks like I’m just walking around a giant chapstick as a dog (I practically am), it’s a metaphor for the struggle of finding a balance between co-dependency and avoidant attachment.”

Peyton Shay’s background in horror shows and theatre shines through in her performance.

There’s a theatrical quality to her delivery that adds depth to the seemingly light-hearted lyrics.

Despite not coming from a musical family, Shay’s passion for artistic expression was kindled through her involvement in local and school theater productions during her childhood.

Her eclectic taste in music draws inspiration from icons like Blondie, Paramore, and Avril Lavigne, fueling her ambition to experiment and innovate in her musical pursuits.

“I appreciate the freedom I had to explore music independently,” Shay comments. “Navigating the ups and downs of growing up, music was a crucial outlet for me.”

The track’s production is polished without being overproduced, and each element, from the synths to the guitar, has room to breathe.

“Lonely Chapstick” is more of a fun ride than a mind-bending journey.

That said, it’s got enough quirk and charm to stick in your head.

If you’re into pop tunes that don’t take themselves too seriously but still pack a punch, give this one a spin.
