The Brooklyn-born artist has been writing music since she was just 12 years old and she echoes the style of major artists such as Maiday and Sabrina Claudio. JUSTY marries jazz with R&B to create a stunning nu-jazz piece of music that speaks to the audience through therapeutic guitar strings and a whimsical vocal.
Rinse, Repeat, Regress is like an anthem for the masses who are facing hardships and who may not love themselves as much as they wish they could right now- something very relatable in the current climate. JUSTY sings “This a eulogy for you and me, I hope that life becomes the things you always wished they’d be”….“gotta learn to love myself because I’ll never leave… I’ll never leave” These are such powerful lyrics speaking of how we need to love ourselves entirely and solidifying that she will never abandon herself the way others may have, something we all need to be more open to doing to ourselves. Loving, and cherishing ourselves.
JUSTY’s music is like therapy to the ears and as she identifies as queer in her community; it was no easy feat and came with some hardships. “Self-acceptance felt like something I had to earn and earning it was based on the merits of everyone else but myself,” she shares. “I figured if I’m a good student, a good kid, a good friend, then I deserve to love and accept myself. We spend a lot of our life learning how to be selfless but it’s taboo to be selfish. I think being selfish in terms of self-preservation has to be more normalized because a lot of people, especially people in my communities, are so self-sacrificing to no avail. I learned that I deserve to accept myself.” Embracing who we are and accepting ourselves for just that – is the inspiration behind this incredible new body of work.
JUSTY takes a lot of inspiration also from artists such as Amy Winehouse, NoName, Anderson Paak, and Lauryn Hill. She has even been talent-spotted by British music powerhouse Kwame Kwaten who brought her on for a two single project where she penned the notable tracks Try(2018) and L8R (2019).
