The Backstory of a Fan-Demanded Banger

After years of pleading from her devoted fanbase, Gracie Abrams has finally released her highly anticipated single Close to You to streaming services.

The wildly catchy track first surfaced as a teaser snippet on Abrams’ Instagram back in September 2017, instantly captivating listeners.

Another preview followed in March 2018, further whetting appetites for the full song’s eventual debut.

Close to You arrives as the second single from Abrams’ sophomore album, The Secret Of Us, released on May 31, 2024.

Though originally intended as a separate standalone track from a different era, the immense fan demand for “Close to You” convinced Abrams to include it as a bonus album addition.

    The “Close to You” Rollout

On May 31, 2024, Close to You made its first official appearance alongside The Secret Of Us lead single Risk in an exclusive vinyl release.

Then on June 4, Abrams revealed the good news that the long-awaited Close to You would finally hit streaming services just a few days later, on June 7.

In an Instagram post, Abrams wrote: “i wrote ‘Close To You’ seven years ago and we made a demo that i posted 20 seconds of and you somehow cared about it enough for us to revisit the song seven years later. ‘Close To You’ was not initially a part of TSOU — it’s from a different time entirely, we had finished the whole record top to bottom, but i heard you loud and clear. consider this one a bonus track pre-deluxe??”

Revealing more about the single’s meaningful journey in a Rolling Stone interview, Abrams said: “After seven years of sitting with the ‘Close To You’ demo, it finally felt right to rework and include on this album. I’m really grateful for the encouragement from everyone online who let me know they still want to hear song after all this time — it makes me want to dance with them, and I can’t wait till we get to do that.”

    An Infectious Summer Anthem

The Writers & Producers Behind “Close to You”

Close To You was produced by Sam de Jong and Gracie Abrams, with both also receiving songwriting credits on the track.

Its upbeat pop production and Abrams’ stellar vocal performance combine to create an infectious summer anthem exploring the desire to be close to someone emotionally unavailable.

Abrams sings with longing in the unforgettable chorus: “I burn for you/ And you don’t even know my name/ If you asked me to/ I’d give up everything/ To be close to you.”

A Nuanced Breakdown of “Close to You” Lyrics

Melodrama and Intimacy: Deconstructing the Track

The instrumentation of Close to You is minimalist yet powerful, anchored by delicate piano chords that provide an intimate foundation for Abrams’ emotive vocal delivery.

Her voice glides with a dreamy, conversational cadence, conveying sincere vulnerability.

Close to You lyrics delves into the complexities of unrequited yearning with cinematic flair.

Evocative lines like “You pull me in and touch my neck, and now I’m dying” and “You should be mine for life, I’ll be signing/Every dotted line” vividly capture the emotional intensity.

With its melodic hooks and relatable themes, Close to You is a strong contender for song of the summer.

The long-awaited release fulfils years of anticipation, rewarding fans’ dedication while allowing the smash single to finally get the attention it deserves on a major stage.

Stream or download Close to You now across all platforms to experience the latest musical gem from rising star Gracie Abrams.

As for the full The Secret Of Us album, fans won’t want to miss Abrams’ thrilling sophomore statement when it releases in full later this year.
