You know how TikTok loves resurrecting songs from the past? Well, Miguel’s Sure Thing is no exception.

Released in 2011, this R&B gem has been quietly soundtracking love stories for over a decade—weddings, proposals, you name it.

Then, in 2023, TikTok worked its viral magic, and suddenly, Sure Thing was back, racing up the UK charts and reminding everyone why it’s one of the most enduring love anthems out there.

But what’s behind this 2023 revival? Why did Sure Thing dominate social media and pop radio again, 12 years after its debut?

Let’s dive into how this ballad is proving that good music truly has no expiration date.

TikTok: Where Old Hits Get New Life

If TikTok has taught us anything, it’s that no song is ever truly forgotten. Case in point: Sure Thing.

The platform’s trend of using classic tracks in viral challenges gave this 2011 love ballad a whole new lease on life.

From slowed-down remixes to sped-up versions, TikTok users began overlaying Sure Thing with everything from heartfelt montages to aesthetic videos.

By late 2022, the song had started to build serious momentum.

“[It was] completely insane to see this track, which first blew up on Myspace, suddenly become a TikTok sensation,” said Happy Perez, co-writer and producer of the song.

This isn’t an isolated case, either. Platforms like TikTok have become engines for reviving older hits.

Think Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill or Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams.

What these songs—and Sure Thing—have in common is their emotional depth, something that continues to resonate with new generations.

Why ‘Sure Thing’ is the Love Anthem That Never Fades

Let’s get one thing straight: Sure Thing didn’t just return because of TikTok. The song has always been a vibe.

Its lyrics—“Love you like a brother, treat you like a friend, respect you like a lover”—are drenched in intimacy, balancing metaphors that make anyone swoon.

It’s the kind of song that sticks, not just because of Miguel’s sultry vocals but because the message of unconditional love is universally relatable.

Even after more than a decade, Sure Thing resonates because it captures the kind of love people crave—steady, grounding, and timeless.

“We weren’t chasing any trends when we made Sure Thing,” said Perez.

“We were just trying to make the best song we could, and that’s why it still holds up today.”

This enduring appeal is why Sure Thing has been the backdrop to so many romantic moments—from weddings to late-night slow dances.

Behind the Scenes: A Song That Almost Wasn’t

Here’s a little insider scoop: Sure Thing almost became an Usher track. Yep, you read that right.

When Miguel’s label first heard the demo, they seriously considered giving it to Usher.

“[Usher] wanted to record it, but I just felt like it could be a game changer for Miguel,” said Mark Pitts, president of RCA.

After dodging that curveball, the song still faced delays due to contract issues with Miguel’s previous label, but eventually, Sure Thing was released in 2011.

It quietly climbed the R&B charts, reaching No. 1, but its real magic wouldn’t happen until over a decade later, thanks to its viral rebirth.

Streaming Playlists and the Digital Revival

While TikTok deserves a lot of credit, let’s not forget about the role streaming platforms played.

Once Sure Thing caught fire online, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music were flooded with requests, pushing the song up playlists globally.

RCA capitalised on this momentum by releasing multiple versions of the track, including sped-up and slowed-down renditions, which only fuelled its rise.

The label also worked closely with TikTok to create campaigns that kept Miguel engaged with his new audience.

As Briana Fennell, associate director of catalog marketing at RCA, put it, “We wanted to make sure Miguel was part of this moment and not just observing it from the sidelines.”

This blending of social media virality and streaming power shows how Sure Thing became a perfect storm of old-school romance meeting modern-day digital trends.

A Cultural Staple: Weddings, Proposals, and Beyond

Beyond TikTok and streaming success, Sure Thing remains a deeply personal song for many listeners.

It’s the kind of track you’d find at weddings, anniversaries, and intimate moments.

“The lyrics just speak to that kind of timeless, unconditional love we all hope to find,” said Miguel in an interview.

And that’s the magic of Sure Thing and it’s still finding new ways to connect with people in 2024, a full 13 years after its release.
